Spooky Mummy Block Accent
This mummy block craft is perfect for crafters of all skill levels, including kids, because it requires very little painting and relies heavily on texture. Cut a 2×4 block to your desired height and paint the entire surface black. This black base coat is crucial because it will peek through the layers of wrapping, adding depth and shadow to the finished piece.
Next, take a roll of inexpensive medical gauze, cheesecloth, or torn strips of white cotton fabric. Secure one end to the back of the block with hot glue, and begin wrapping it tightly around the wood, overlapping the layers in various directions to mimic ancient mummy bandages. Leave a small gap near the top third of the block. In this gap, glue two large, glowing wiggle eyes or paint two yellow, menacing eyes staring out from the darkness. Secure the final end of the gauze with another dab of glue, and lightly brush the edges of the fabric with brown ink or watered-down brown paint to give the mummy an authentic, ancient, tomb-fresh appearance.
