14. Yarn-Wrapped Cardboard Mummies

14

Yarn wrapping is an excellent quiet-time activity that promotes concentration, patience, and fine motor development. Cut simple mummy shapes out of thick, sturdy cardboard from shipping boxes. Give your child a bundle of white, cream, or light gray yarn. Tape one end of the yarn to the back of the cardboard mummy shape to secure it. Let your child wrap the yarn around and around the cardboard figure in every direction, crossing over the body, arms, and legs until the cardboard is mostly covered. Be sure to leave a small space near the top of the head uncovered so they can glue on a pair of googly eyes. The result is a wonderfully textured, sturdy little mummy that can stand up on its own or be hung as an ornament.
