Creepy Crawly Spider Pumpkin
Put a unique twist on traditional pumpkin carving by creating a giant, creepy-crawly spider pumpkin. This project uses a large, vibrant orange pumpkin as the spider’s body and flexible, black foam pipe insulation or thick bendable branches as the oversized legs. It is a fantastic alternative to carving that lasts much longer because the pumpkin remains intact, preventing early rotting and keeping your porch looking fresh and festive all month long.
To build your spider pumpkin, select a large, round pumpkin and clean the exterior. For the legs, cut eight equal lengths of black foam pipe insulation or thick, flexible black vine branches. To make the legs bend realistically, insert heavy-gauge wire inside the foam tubes so you can shape them into jointed spider legs. Drill eight small holes into the sides of the pumpkin—four on each side—and insert the ends of the wire legs securely into the holes. Bend the legs so they support themselves and touch the ground, making the pumpkin appear as if it is crawling. Paint a pair of menacing red eyes on the front, or attach two smaller white gourds as eyes to complete the arachnid look.
