Floating Cheesecloth Ghosts

20

Create a truly magical, floating decoration that will amaze your children and guests alike. Floating cheesecloth ghosts look incredibly professional and spooky, yet they are surprisingly simple to make using basic household supplies. This project is a wonderful hands-on science experiment disguised as a craft, showcasing how liquid starch can turn soft fabric into a rigid, freestanding sculpture.

To begin, create a temporary mold using a plastic bottle or cup topped with a balloon or tennis ball to represent the ghost’s head. Drape a piece of lightweight cheesecloth over the mold to measure the size, then saturate the fabric in a bowl of liquid fabric starch or diluted white school glue. Drape the wet cheesecloth back over your mold, shaping the bottom edges so they pool elegantly on a protected surface. Once completely dry, the starch will harden, allowing you to gently remove the inner mold. You will be left with a rigid, freestanding, translucent ghost that appears to float on its own. Add two small black felt eyes to the face, and display these hauntingly beautiful spirits on your tabletop or suspend them from the ceiling with clear thread for a truly enchanting Halloween display.
