Paper Plate Spider Webs
Introduce your toddler to the wonders of weaving with this simplified Paper Plate Spider Web craft. While traditional weaving can be too complex for young children, this adaptation uses a pre-punched paper plate to make the process accessible and highly rewarding. Threading yarn through the holes is an exceptional fine motor activity that promotes hand-eye coordination, patience, and concentration. The addition of a friendly, homemade spider completes this charming Halloween decoration.
Take a paper plate and cut out the center circle. Use a hole punch to create a series of holes spaced about an inch apart around the inner rim of the plate. Tie a long piece of thick black, white, or purple yarn to one of the holes. Wrap the other end of the yarn with a piece of masking tape to create a stiff “needle” that is easy for toddler fingers to grasp. Show your toddler how to thread the yarn across the plate, pushing it through a hole on the opposite side, and repeating the process to create a criss-cross web pattern. Once they are finished weaving, tie off the end. Help them glue a small black pom-pom to the web and add tiny wiggle eyes to make a cute little resident spider.
