If your home lacks a fireplace, Halloween is the perfect excuse to build a temporary, atmospheric Gothic hearth out of cardboard boxes. Tape together large rectangular boxes to form the two side pillars and a long, sturdy crossbeam for the mantelpiece. Cover the structure in textured brick-patterned wallpaper, or paint individual faux bricks using a sponge dipped in terracotta, charcoal, and ash-gray paint.
