13. The Cascading Pin-Curls Crown Updo

13

Pin curls have long been the secret weapon of vintage Hollywood stylists for generating maximum volume out of delicate hair. Instead of brushing out curls completely, this updo sets the hair in small ringlets, which are then individually pinned to the back of the head in a cascading, overlapping cluster that resembles a blooming flower cluster.

Because each pin curl is hollow in its center, it occupies far more space than a flat section of hair would, effectively multiplying the visual volume of fine hair. The result is a dynamic, textural sculpture of soft curls that bounces gently with movement. A light dusting of shine spray ensures the curls catch the light beautifully during evening receptions.
