How to Make It
- Supplies: Solid half-round pine dowels (1/2-inch wide), backing plywood, solid oak outer frame molding, miter saw, wood glue, natural clear polyurethane or teak oil.
- Step 1: Cut the half-round dowels to uniform lengths using a miter saw.
- Step 2: Clean and sand all cut dowel pieces with fine 220-grit sandpaper.
- Step 3: Apply wood glue along the back of each dowel and place them tightly side-by-side across the plywood backer.
- Step 4: Frame the exterior edges with solid oak border trim, securing the corners with mitered joints.
- Step 5: Apply two coats of matte natural teak oil or matte furniture wax to enhance the natural grain.
Styling Tips & Variations
- Paint the fluted dowels in a deep matte hue (like obsidian black or forest green) while keeping the outer oak border natural.
